Our Story Started in Rural Healthcare

North American Healthcare Management Services was founded in 1992 by Charles A. James, Ph.D.

But our story really began before that.

Charles and his brothers —John, Don, and Robert, all physicians—helped pioneer some of the first medical groups in rural Missouri.

Together, the James brothers grew the Clinic from two physicians in one location to 43 full-time physicians, several part-time physicians, and nine locations.

Our founders understood firsthand what it took to operate and grow healthcare in rural communities.

Their experience became the foundation for North American HMS.

From One Rural Healthcare Story to Many

As our knowledge of reimbursement and clinic management grew, other healthcare organizations began asking for help.

So did we.

Over the years, North American HMS expanded its services to help Rural Health Clinics, Federally Qualified Health Centers, hospital-owned clinics, physician practices, medical groups, and other healthcare organizations across the country.

Following Dr. James’ passing in 2004, the next generation continued what he started, with Charles James, Jr. taking over as CEO and David James as CFO.

Today, our services have grown far beyond where we started—but rural healthcare remains at the heart of what we do.
